Explores Material Transformation Through Contemporary Sculpture
A group invitational exhibition curated by artist Tashina Marie brings together seven artists whose work pushes material beyond its expected roles through sculpture and wall-based practices.
Presented in conjunction with the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA) exhibition Fiction and its opening, Emergent Forms expands the celebration of contemporary sculpture through a diverse group of artists working across glass, photography, encaustic, ceramics, paper, collage, found materials, light, and mixed-media practices.

The exhibition features work by Linda L. Anderson, Abigail Corman, Chelsea Moulder, Carolyn King, Michelle Meadow, Jarrid Scott XII, and S. Manya Stoumen-Tolino.
Rather than organizing the exhibition around a shared medium or visual style, Marie approached Emergent Forms through a common question: what happens when artists allow materials to move beyond their conventional functions and become something unexpected?
“These artists ask what becomes possible when material is released from the boundaries of what it has been told it should be. It becomes a vessel for something freed from expectation. In that space beyond convention, material and form become sites of transformation, where the familiar can give way to something not yet defined, and possibility remains open-ended,” said Marie. “Form becomes less a finished condition than something continually in the process of becoming.”
Emergent Forms: The Shape of Becoming opens October 16, 2026, at 210 Gallery in Todd Hall at Middle Tennessee State University. An opening reception will be held Saturday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m., in conjunction with the opening of the MSA’s exhibition across the hall in Todd Gallery.
